Individualized Sedation Solutions

Sedation dentistry is the foundation of a stress-free patient experience. We work directly with patients to decide on the best sedation approach. Our sedation options include sleep dentistry and conscious dentistry.

Types of Sedation

There are many types of sedation medications available, from injections to laughing gas.

Nitrous Oxide

Another term for nitrous oxide sedation is “laughing gas.” Commonly used to make dental treatments more comfortable, nitrous oxide helps patients feel at ease in the dental chair. It is inhaled through a mask and reduces anxiety. It creates a state of relaxation during the duration of the treatment.

We gently place a mask over your nose and mouth. We next ask you to take deep breaths, and within seconds, your anxiety melts away, replaced with relaxation. This simple sedation carries the least risk, with side effects disappearing once you remove the mask.

The recovery time is brief because the nitrous oxide rapidly leaves the system when the treatment is complete. Depending on the patient’s needs and requests, laughing gas can be used for services from regular cleanings to more advanced procedures.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is a conscious sedation option if you’re uncomfortable with nitrous oxide or IV sedation. This type of sedation is a prescription pill taken by mouth. The medication will make you feel drowsy and relaxed.

Depending on the sedative, you may fall asleep during treatment. The sedation effects will require most of the day to wear off.

Sedation FAQs

How safe is sedation dentistry?

Sedation is a proven treatment for safe dentistry procedures. Trained professionals administer sedation. The use of sedation keeps the patient’s blood pressure from rising. Research shows that treatment is safer when blood pressure is reduced.

How long does it take for the sedation to wear off?

Depending on the sedation used for treatment, recovery time varies. Because sedation causes drowsiness, you shouldn’t drive, drink alcohol or operate machinery after sedation. We recommend that you arrange transportation to and from your dental treatment.
